This towering column in Union Square commemorates the telegraph sent from the U.S. war office at the onset of the Spanish American War. The telegraph tersely instructs the American Admiral to steam into Manila harbor and begin the complete destruction of the Spanish Pacific fleet. Very macho, eh?
